Mr. Aaron Chew

Aaron is currently a third-year PhD candidate at the Australian National University (ANU) School of Music. He is studying under Emeritus Professor Larry Sitsky AO and learning piano performance from Kotaro Nagano and Wendy Lorenz. His dissertation focuses on the pianism of Italian-German pianist, Ferruccio Busoni, and how his idiosyncratic interpretations of a selection of piano recordings propagates insightful and meaningful ways of piano playing. Aaron graduated with a Master of Music (Advanced) degree with First Class Honours and a University Medal at the Australian National University in July 2016. He graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Piano Performance and Psychology. Aaron’s pre-tertiary teachers were the late Madam Ya Ching and Marie Cull. He gained his AMusA with Distinction in 2007, his LMusA in 2010, and was awarded the FMusA in 2017. Some of Aaron’s awards and scholarships during his tertiary years include: First Prize and Joint-People's Choice Prize of the Whitworth Roach Classical Music Competition (2017), two-time winner of the Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize (2013, 2015), a work-study scholarship from the Golandsky Institute to perform in the Summer Symposium in Princeton University, USA (2016), the Dennis Griffin National Piano Masters Scholarship (2015), and the Iman Nassir Piano Performance Prize (2013). Highlights of his pre-tertiary music studies comprised of performances at the Sydney Opera House, as part of the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) Encore in 2009 and 2012. Other musical activities include embarking on a three-week PhD research trip to the Archive of Recorded Sound in Stanford University, USA, performing as a guest artist at the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) NSW Centenary Concert, recording a CD of Larry Sitsky’s Piano Sonata No.4 ‘Sufi Path’, collaborative performances with Dave Eggar, David Pereira, Larry Sitsky, Peter Tregear, and Arnan Wiesel, performing as a Young Artist in for the ACT Musica Viva Series at the Polish Embassy and the Canberra International Music Festival, and masterclasses with Ewa Poblocka and Roger Woodward. In addition to his active performance profile, Aaron is also a passionate piano teacher who runs his own private piano studio. He takes his teaching responsibilities very seriously. Aaron is currently the Aural and Theory Skills Coordinator of the Music Development Program (MDP) at the ANU School of Music. He is also a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society, the ACT Keyboard Association and the Klavier Music Association.
