Methods
Plot set-up
1
Steel pickets, measuring tape, GPS
In 1990, 56 permanent 0.5 x 0.5 metre plots were established along eight 30 metre transects arranged in pairs, with each transect comprising seven plots spaced 5 metres apart. The four transect pairs are spaced a mean distance of 211 metres apart (min = 104 m; max = 323 m). Soil samples were collected in the immediate vicinity of each plot on seven occasions (1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002 and 2014).
Soil survey
2
2.7 cm pipe auger, plastic bags, soil analytical laboratory
At each plot, 5-10 soil cores (diameter: 27 mm; length = 100 mm) were sampled randomly within 10cm of the plot boundary. Surface litter was removed from samples prior to collection. In each given sampling year, the cores from each plot were collected on the same day, homogenised and stored in sealed clip-lock plastic bags for transport to the laboratory for analysis for a range of variables, including organic carbon (all years), ammonium nitrogen (NH4) (all years excluding 1991, 1999 and 2014), nitrate nitrogen (NO3) (all years excluding 1991), total iron (all years excluding 1991, 1995 and 2002), phosphorus (all years excluding 1991, 1995 and 2002), conductivity (all years), pH (all years), cation-exchange capacity (CEC) (all years) and various exchangeable cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg & Al) (all years)
