Full DescriptionAbstract: The Upland Heath Swamps Plot Network Soil Moisture data package for Royal National Park contains soil moisture data obtained between 2012 and 2014 from monitoring tubes for soil moisture probes installed within 10 cm of each of the floristics plots (see Keith, D (2017): Upland Heath Swamps Plot Network: Vegetation Floristics, Royal National Park, Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia, 1990-2014. Long Term Ecological Research Network, http://doi.org/10.25911/5c36e061dc7da). Soil moisture sampling commenced in early August 2013 and was repeated at monthly intervals until July 2014.

Study extent: Sampling occurred monthly from August 2013 to July 2014.Plot T6Q6 was not surveyed.

Project funding: Between 2012 and 2018 this project was part of, and funded through the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTERN) a facility within the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) and supported by the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy.

Description
In 1990, 56 permanent 0.5 x 0.5 metre plots were established along eight 30 metre transects arranged in pairs, with each transect comprising seven plots spaced 5 metres apart. The four transect pairs are spaced a mean distance of 211 metres apart (min = 104 m; max = 323 m).

Soil moisture survey
Description
In March-May 2013, 56 100 cm access tubes for a PR2/6 soil moisture profile probe (Delta-T Devices: http://www.delta-t.co.uk) were installed within 10 cm of each plot. The probe is fitted with six sensors allowing for instantaneous soil moisture measurements at six depths (10/20/30/40/60/100 cm). After a two month settling-in period, soil moisture sampling commenced in early August 2013 and was repeated at approximately monthly intervals until July 2014. At each monthly interval, three readings (x six depths) were taken at each plot, with the probe rotated through 120 degrees between each reading. The three replicate readings at each depth were subsequently averaged.
